Counting of votes for the bypolls to the Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Mandi and Khandwa Lok Sabha seats was taken up on Monday, two days after polling concluded. The by-elections to the three parliamentary seats were held following the deaths of sitting members, with the Election Commission having scheduled the count for November 2.

Assembly bypolls held alongside the parliamentary contests were also counted as part of the same cycle under the Commission's framework. Counting proceeded through successive rounds at designated centres, with security arrangements in place at the counting halls across the three states.

Why it matters

By-election outcomes are closely parsed for signals on local organisation and sentiment between general elections. The results across three states carry implications for the parties contesting them and add to the running assessment of the political landscape at the state and national levels.

While the numbers at stake are small in the arithmetic of the Lok Sabha, by-elections often serve as morale markers for party cadres and as early tests of candidate choices and local alliances. The verdicts will be studied for what they say about each party's organisational health in the constituencies concerned.
