Delhi-NCR Air Turns 'Poor' As GRAP Stage I Curbs Kick In Ahead Of Winter

Delhi's air quality has slipped into the 'poor' category as the capital enters its annual winter pollution season, prompting authorities to activate the first stage of emergency restrictions across the National Capital Region. The Central Pollution Control Board recorded an Air Quality Index of 223 at 8 am on Friday, a marginal change from the previous day's reading in the same band.

Several localities fared worse than the citywide average, with monitoring stations in areas such as Jahangirpuri, Rohini and Punjabi Bagh registering readings near the upper end of the 'poor' range. The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan earlier in the week as pollution levels climbed.

Under Stage I, which applies when the AQI is between 201 and 300, authorities tighten dust-control measures at construction sites, step up mechanised road sweeping and water sprinkling, and intensify checks on polluting vehicles and open waste burning.

Why it matters

Delhi's winter air crisis is a recurring public-health challenge, with prolonged exposure to elevated particulate levels linked to respiratory and cardiovascular problems, particularly for children, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. The early onset of 'poor' days is a warning sign, as conditions typically deteriorate further through November when cooler temperatures, slower winds and additional seasonal factors trap pollutants closer to the ground.

The capital recorded its first 'poor' air day of the season earlier in the week, coinciding with festive-season activity and reports of crop-residue burning in neighbouring states. The combination of local emissions and regional sources has historically driven the sharpest spikes in pollution.

What to watch

The key question is whether the AQI stabilises or pushes into the 'very poor' and 'severe' bands, which would trigger stricter GRAP stages involving curbs on construction, certain vehicle categories and industrial activity. Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor exposure during peak pollution hours and to cooperate with dust-control and anti-burning measures.

Officials across NCR will be monitoring readings closely in the days ahead, with the trajectory of the index determining how far restrictions are escalated this winter.
