The opposition INDIA bloc on Thursday said its planned "public impeachment" event targeting the Chief Election Commissioner had been postponed to October 31, with leaders citing heavy rain in the national capital. The decision was announced after a joint press conference held outside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in New Delhi.

Senior Congress leaders, along with a Trinamool Congress representative and other bloc members, addressed reporters together. The programme is the latest in a series of coordinated opposition moves centred on the Election Commission's conduct of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, an issue the alliance has pressed in recent weeks.

Why it matters

The rescheduling signals the opposition's intent to keep the spotlight on the Election Commission in the run-up to larger mobilisations. Coordinated appearances by Congress, the Trinamool Congress and allied leaders point to a continued effort to present a unified front on electoral-process questions, a theme likely to shape political messaging ahead of forthcoming polls.

With a larger rally planned in the capital in the days that followed, the postponement did little to blunt the alliance's momentum on the issue. The electoral-roll revision has emerged as one of the clearest points of coordination for an opposition that has at times struggled to maintain a common line, giving the bloc a shared platform to rally around.
