Nifty Reclaims 23,000 As Benchmarks Cap A Firm Festive Week

Indian equities closed the week on a confident note, with the benchmark indices extending their recovery into a second straight session on Friday. The BSE Sensex added about 308 points to settle near 74,460, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose around 116 points to close at roughly 23,053, its first finish above the 23,000 mark in eight sessions.

For the week, the gains were broader. The Nifty rose close to 2.6 per cent and the Sensex advanced about 1.8 per cent, with pharma, healthcare and information technology counters doing much of the heavy lifting. A return of foreign portfolio inflows after a stretch of selling, combined with a steady stream of second-quarter earnings, helped steady sentiment.

What drove the move

The week's tone was shaped by a mix of domestic and global cues. On the domestic side, corporate results through the October earnings season have largely held up, reinforcing confidence in the underlying demand picture heading into the festive stretch. IT stocks rebounded smartly, and defensives such as pharma offered ballast on days when global risk appetite wobbled.

Not everything moved in step. Energy and auto counters lagged on Friday, and mid-cap indices saw patches of profit-taking, a reminder that the rally has been selective rather than uniform. Elevated crude prices and an uncertain external backdrop, including attention on developments in the United States, kept traders from turning uniformly bullish.

What it means

Reclaiming 23,000 is as much a psychological marker as a technical one. A close above a round number that has acted as resistance tends to improve near-term confidence, and the return of foreign inflows suggests overseas investors are warming again to Indian risk assets after a cautious spell.

The season ahead offers its own tailwinds. With Dhanteras and Diwali approaching, consumption-linked sectors typically draw interest, and festive demand often feeds into the earnings narrative. The caveats remain crude oil, currency pressure and the pace of global rate expectations. But as a weekly scorecard, the message was clear: buyers were back in control, and the market entered the festive fortnight on the front foot.
