'Operation Tiger' and the Sena UBT Split Speculation — The Same Playbook, the Fifth Time

By Squirrels·

The Denial That Confirms the Crisis

On Wednesday morning, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajabhau Waje stepped off a train at Delhi and was immediately asked whether he was defecting.

"I am with Uddhav ji and will remain with him. I have no contacts with anyone else. I have not received any call, no contact has been established with me by Shinde ji. I am not upset."

When asked whether he was aware of MPs breaking away and whether they had the required numbers, Waje said: "I don't know yet. You are talking to me while I'm still on the train. I haven't even got down. What would I know? There is no network in the train."

When an MP has to publicly deny defection before he has left the railway platform, the crisis is already real. The question is whether the numbers are.

The Numbers: 6 Out of 9

Shiv Sena (UBT) has 9 Lok Sabha MPs.

Reports indicate that 6 MPs are being courted to break away — under what the party's own leadership is calling "Operation Tiger", a reference to the tiger mascot drawn by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

The anti-defection threshold: two-thirds of 9 = 6.

If the reports are accurate, the rebel count is exactly the minimum threshold — the same arithmetic that has defined every split this year.

Uddhav Thackeray convened an emergency meeting on Sunday. Only 4 MPs attended physically. Five joined via video call. The party subsequently issued a whip for all MPs to attend a meeting in Delhi on Thursday.

Sanjay Raut, Thackeray's closest ally, alleged that a chartered aircraft was arranged to fly two Sena (UBT) MPs from Nanded to Delhi — and claimed that ₹15 crore in advance payments had been offered to MPs to switch sides. Shinde camp leader Pratap Sarnaik publicly hinted at welcoming dissidents, saying they would be given "priority."

The Template: Five Times in Four Years

This series has now documented the same playbook operating across multiple opposition parties. The pattern is identical each time.

Every instance shares the same structural features:

1. The target party has been weakened by electoral defeat or political marginalisation.
2. The rebel count is calibrated to the two-thirds anti-defection threshold — not one MP more than necessary.
3. The rebels do not join the BJP directly — they form a "separate group" or merge with a shell party.
4. The political party's leadership denies the split until it is announced. 5. The defection happens first; courts adjudicate later.

What Sena UBT's Vulnerability Looks Like

Shiv Sena has already been split once — in June 2022, when Eknath Shinde walked out with 40 of 55 MLAs. The 2022 split cost Uddhav Thackeray the Chief Ministership, the party name (briefly), and the party symbol.

What remains of Sena (UBT) is a rump parliamentary presence: 9 Lok Sabha MPs and a diminished organisational structure in Maharashtra, where the Shinde-BJP alliance controls the state government.

A second split — this time of the Lok Sabha unit — would reduce Sena (UBT) to 3 MPs or fewer. At that point, the party's ability to function as a meaningful parliamentary force effectively ends.

For context: if Sena (UBT) loses 6 MPs, it retains fewer Lok Sabha members than NCPI now has after absorbing 20 TMC defectors. The party founded by Bal Thackeray — which once held 18 Lok Sabha seats (2014) — would be reduced to a single-digit rump in both its factions combined.

What to Watch

Thursday's meeting. The whip has been issued. Which MPs physically attend will be the first hard data on loyalty.

The Speaker's role. If 6 MPs approach Speaker Birla, he faces the same Paragraph 4 question as in the TMC-NCPI case — where he has already established the precedent of hearing both sides first.

The shell party question. If Sena (UBT) MPs split, do they merge with NCPI (the TMC template), join the Shinde Sena directly, or find yet another registered unrecognised party to park in? The method determines the legal exposure.

The ₹15 crore claim. Sanjay Raut's allegation of cash inducements — if substantiated — invokes anti-corruption provisions separate from the anti-defection law. Whether any evidence materialises will determine if this allegation has legal legs or remains political rhetoric.

The Bottom Line

Rajabhau Waje says he is with Uddhav. The numbers say 6 out of 9 are being courted — precisely the two-thirds threshold. Emergency meetings are being called. Whips are being issued. Chartered planes are allegedly being arranged.

The data from four previous splits tells us what this sequence produces. The only question is whether the fifth iteration follows the same pattern — or whether the Speaker's both-sides precedent from the TMC case introduces a new variable.
