A United Nations-commissioned inquiry has found that Israel continued to commit grave abuses against Palestinians in Gaza despite a ceasefire that took effect a year earlier. In findings released on October 26, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel was continuing to commit what it termed genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has consistently rejected allegations of genocide.
According to the commission, Israeli forces expanded territorial control in Gaza since the truce, and fire along the advancing front line killed hundreds of Palestinians, including many children. Palestinian health authorities say more than a thousand Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in the year since the ceasefire began.
The report also addressed the occupied West Bank, citing a sharp rise in Palestinians killed in airstrikes compared with the years before the conflict escalated in late 2023.
What happens next
Commission findings carry no enforcement power but add to the documentary record cited in proceedings at international courts and in debate at the United Nations. The report is likely to intensify diplomatic pressure around the fragile ceasefire's enforcement, even as aid access and reconstruction in Gaza remain deeply constrained.
