The Apple iPad is likely to be assembled soon by contract manufacturer Foxconn at the company’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, continuing with plans to expand operations in India.

The Squirrels on July 22 had reported how the Economic Survey tabled in Lok Sabha on Monday stated that India made 14 per cent of all iPhones sold worldwide in the fiscal year 2023-’24, or FY24.

“Apple assembled USD 14 billion worth of iPhones in India during FY'24, constituting 14 per cent of its global iPhone production,” the Economic Survey said, validating the fact that manufacture of Apple products in India has been steadily on the rise.

Currently, international contract manufacturers only assemble iPhones in India, and the production of iPads at the Sriperumbudur facility is widely being seen as a move that would create scope for the brand’s supply chain to grow in the country. “Foxconn is seriously looking to start assembling Apple iPads out of its Tamil Nadu facility,” a source told The Economic Times.

A round of discussions have taken place between the government and the company, according to a source, and the results so far have been positive. The contract manufacturers plan to make twice the number of Apple products than it currently produces in India over the next few years. The products planned for manufacture also include Apple gadgets beyond iPhones and iPads.

While it would take a while to manufacture Apple’s Mac range of personal computers in India owing to the limited demand and production value, the iPad is essentially like bigger version of the iPhone, the report noted. Hence, assembling the iPad in India, where the iPhone is already being manufactured full scale, is expected to be hassle-free.

In India, Apple products are being made by the contract manufacturers Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. Of these, Tata acquired a 100 per cent equity stake in Wistron last year.
