Gen Z are the most disengaged group among India’s workforce, with 34 per cent of the group, aged 24 or less, saying they are dissatisfied at work, according to a survey report titled Navigating The New Era Of Talent. Dissatisfaction at work, however, is not confined to the youngest of workforce groups, but runs across all age groups, the survey shows.

The report, based on a survey conducted on 1,100 respondents, says Generation Y or Millennials, aged 25 to 40, rank second, with 31 per cent saying they feel dissatisfied at work. Baby Boomers, or the age group from 57 to 75, are third with 30 per cent dissatisfied professionals.

On Gen X, or employees born in the 1970s and ’80s, the report notes that the age group is more tolerant and don’t have issues being followers of hierarchy.

Managing workforces comprising multiple generations is often one of the biggest challenges across the country, and 40 per cent respondent employers cite this as a problematic issue, adds CIEL HR Services, a human resource company headquartered in Bengaluru quoting the survey report.

Other major challenges that respondent employers mention are technological adaptability (31 per cent) and work-life balance gaps (20 per cent).

An important finding of the survey is 9 per cent of respondents agree that age-group stereotyping is a major hurdle in the process of creating a diverse workforce.

“Companies that can leverage these differences will be able to bring out the best in their people, build a healthy talent pipeline and ensure sustainable business growth,” the survey report says. It adds a positive work culture always works as a major motivator for all generations even as it is increasingly becoming difficult to tackle employee challenges at the workplace, what with disparity between aspirations of employees and what the workplace offers growing constantly.
