India’s Unemployment Rate for people aged 15 years and above remains unchanged at 3.2 per cent in the July 2023-June 2024 period, according to the annual report of Labour Force Survey. The nation’s Worker Population Ratio in usual status, or percentage of people having a job, has on the other hand risen from 56.0 per cent in July 2022-June 2023 to 58.2 per cent in July 2023-June 2024.
Unemployment Rate (UR) is defined by the report as the percentage unemployed among the country’s total labour force. Gender-wise, the Unemployment Rate for men has dropped marginally to 3.2 per cent in July 2023-June 2024 from 3.3 per cent in July 2022-June 2023, the report shows, while UR for women has risen to 3.2 per cent from 2.9 per cent in the same period of time.
There was rise in the nation’s Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in usual status, or percentage of the entire population with a job, from 56.0 per cent in July 2022-June 2023 to 58.2 per cent in July 2023-June 2024. WPR for women aged 15 and above rose from 35.9 per cent in the July 2022-June 2023 period to 40.3 per during July 2023-June 2024. For men, WPR increased to 76.3 per cent in July 2023-June 2024.
Meanwhile, the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), or the percentage of the labour force who are working or are looking for work, aged 15 and above is 60.1 per cent in July 2023-June 2024, up from 57.9 per cent the year before.
Gender-wise division shows LFPR for men aged 15 and above has increased from 78.5 per cent in July 2022-June 2023 to 78.8 per cent in July 2023-June 2024. For women, the numbers have risen from 37.0 per cent to 41.7 per cent in the same period, the report shows.
The annual report is based on the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). Six reports covering rural and urban India have been released since July 2017-June 2018.
