Nitin Nabin Set to Become New BJP National President: A Generational Shift in Leadership
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in the national capital buzzed with activity today as nominations for the post of national president were filed, paving the way for Nitin Nabin, the 45-year-old Bihar leader and current national working president, to formally ascend to the party's top organisational role.
Nitin Nabin, a five-time MLA from Bihar's Bankipur constituency, filed his nomination papers between 2 pm and 4 pm under the schedule released by BJP national returning officer K. Laxman last week. The process unfolded as a ceremonial display of unity, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, outgoing president J.P. Nadda, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states among those present to propose and endorse Nabin's candidature.
Three sets of nominations were submitted in support of Nabin: one backed by over 20 elected BJP state presidents, another featuring signatures from top national leaders including Modi, Shah, Singh, and Nadda, and a third drawing from members of the BJP National Council. No other candidate emerged, ensuring Nabin's election will be unopposed—a tradition in recent BJP presidential transitions.

Show of Strength: PM Modi and Top Brass Propose Candidature
The scrutiny of nomination papers took place from 4 pm to 5 pm, followed by a brief window for withdrawals until 6 pm. With no challengers, the formal announcement of Nabin as the party's 12th national president is expected tomorrow, January 20, potentially accompanied by an oath-taking ceremony at the headquarters.
Nabin's rise marks a significant generational shift for the BJP. Appointed national working president in December 2025 following his strong performance in the Bihar Assembly elections—where he secured a massive margin of over 51,000 votes in Bankipur—he brings a blend of grassroots experience, organisational acumen, and ideological commitment. The son of late BJP veteran Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, a former MLA instrumental in the party's early growth in Bihar, Nitin entered politics after his father's demise and built a formidable record through multiple terms as an MLA and as a minister handling key portfolios like road construction.
His organisational credentials extend beyond Bihar: he has served as BJP in-charge for states like Chhattisgarh and played a pivotal role in strengthening the NDA alliance with JD(U), contributing to electoral successes in the region. Party insiders credit his energy, dedication to booth-level mobilisation, and focus on connecting ordinary workers and beneficiaries to government schemes as key factors in his elevation.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier praised Nabin as a "hard-working karyakarta" with "rich organisational experience" and an "impressive record," expressing confidence that his leadership would strengthen the party. The move aligns with the BJP's emphasis on youth-driven, merit-based leadership while rejecting dynastic tendencies.
Nabin's presidency comes at a critical juncture. The party is gearing up for assembly elections in states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry in the coming months, followed by major contests in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and others in 2027. Analysts see his appointment as a signal of intensified efforts to expand in southern and eastern India, build on recent gains, and maintain organisational momentum ahead of future national challenges.
As the "Sangathan Parva" (organisation festival) culminates tomorrow, Nabin's formal takeover is poised to inject fresh dynamism into the world's largest political party, continuing its focus on unity, expansion, and delivery under the broader leadership of Modi and Shah.
