The United Nations defines pollution as the presence of substances or heat in the environment that produces undesirable effects:
- These substances or heat can be in the air, water, or land
- The nature, location, or quantity of these substances or heat can produce undesirable environmental effects
- Pollution can also include activities that generate pollutants

In 2022, 175 nations agreed to develop a legally binding agreement on plastic pollution by 2024. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from plastic production, use, and disposal.
