Reservation is a system of affirmative action established in India during the period of British colonial rule. Under the provisions outlined in the Indian Constitution, this system enables the Union Government, as well as the States and Union Territories of India, to allocate a specific percentage of reserved quotas or seats for higher education admissions, employment opportunities, and political representation, aimed at benefiting "socially and economically disadvantaged citizens."
