Following the recent relaxation of airspace restrictions by Israel and Iran, approximately 1,000 Indian citizens, including students, pilgrims and other travellers, are preparing to return home from Mashhad, Iran. The decision to ease these restrictions comes after a period of heightened regional tensions that had severely disrupted air travel, leaving many Indians stranded in the holy city, an important destination for Shi'ah Muslim pilgrims.
The Indian embassy in Tehran has been working diligently to ensure the safe and orderly repatriation of its citizens, coordinating with local Iranian authorities and airlines to facilitate their departure. A senior official from the embassy noted, "The situation has stabilised, and we are coordinating with local authorities to ensure smooth evacuation," highlighting the collaborative efforts to resolve the crisis.
The stranded Indians
The stranded individuals, many of whom had travelled to Mashhad for religious or educational purposes, faced uncertainty due to the earlier closure of airspace amid geopolitical conflicts.
The Indian government, prioritising the safety of its citizens, swiftly intervened to arrange special flights for their return. This development has brought immense relief to those affected, with one student expressing gratitude, stating, "We were worried, but now we feel safe knowing we’re going home soon."
The resumption of commercial flight operations, made possible by the lifting of airspace restrictions, has further eased the process, allowing airlines to schedule additional services to accommodate the repatriation effort.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has been closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that logistical challenges are addressed promptly. Consular support has been extended to those in Mashhad, with helplines established to assist families back in India.
This operation underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad, even in complex geopolitical circumstances. As the situation continues to stabilise, the embassy remains vigilant, ready to support any additional citizens who may require assistance in returning home safely.
