Bihar Police arrested JD(U) candidate and former MLA Anant Singh on 3 November in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj Party worker Dular Chand Yadav. The arrest came days before Bihar's assembly elections, where Anant Singh is contesting from Mokama.
Police also detained his associates Manikant Thakur and Ranjit Ram.
Details of the murder
Dular Chand Yadav, 75, was killed while campaigning for Jan Suraaj's Priyadarshi Piyush in Mokama.
He died of cardiorespiratory failure due to shock from a heart injury, as per the post-mortem report.
Yadav was allegedly targeted for his affiliation with Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj, seen as a threat to established parties.
Police investigation and arrests
Patna SSP Rajeev Mishra confirmed: "Anant Singh has been arrested in connection with the murder."
Police have arrested 80 people so far, including Anant Singh.
The investigation revealed Yadav was campaigning when attacked, with caste angles emerging in statements.
Anant Singh's gunman was involved in a bribe case, linking to broader corruption allegations.
Rohtak SP Surendra Singh Bhoria said: "A Forensic team has been called here and an investigation is being carried out."
Political reactions and implications
The JD(U) has not commented on the arrest, but the party faces scrutiny for fielding Anant Singh, a known bahubali.
RJD's Tejashwi Yadav said: "Give me a chance, will send all goondas to jail."
The arrest could impact the NDA campaign in Mokama, a Bhumihar belt where caste plays a key role.
Jan Suraaj condemned the killing, with Prashant Kishor stating: "This is an attack on democracy."
Anant Singh, a strongman with a criminal record, represents Bihar's bahubali tradition, where muscle power influences polls.
The case highlights violence in Bihar elections, with police vowing strict action.
As voting nears, the murder turns Mokama into a prestige battle for NDA and opposition.
