The country known as the United States of America (USA) or America is primarily situated in North America. It is a federation of 50 states, including a federal capital district (Washington, DC) and 326 Indian reservations. The 48 contiguous states share borders with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. Alaska is noncontiguous and located to the northwest, while Hawaii is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the states, the US also has sovereignty over five major unincorporated island territories and various uninhabited islands. The country boasts the world's third-largest land area, second-largest exclusive economic zone, and third-largest population, which exceeds 334 million.
